An Investigation of Tabanidae Species (Diptera) in the Hatay Province

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out in order to identify Tabanidae species in the Hatay province during July and August 2002. A total of 622 Tabanidae specimens were collected by hand from hosts at localities including Antakya, Belen, Hatay and Iskenderun. The places where specimens were collected are centers of research near water sources, grasslands, mountains covered with scrubs up to 800-1650 m and forest clearings. Nineteen species from 4 genera were identified during this study. One subspecies from Chrysops (C. (s.str.) caecutiens ludens), 2 species from each of Dasyrhamphis and Philipomyia (D. umbrinus, D. carbonarius, P. aprica, P. graeca), 14 species from Tabanus (T. bromius, T. eggeri, T. exclusus, T. fraseri, T. glaucopis, T. indrae, T. cuculus, T. leleani, T. lunatus, T. miki, T. shannonellus, T. spectabilis, T. spodopterus, T. tergestinus) were identified. Among these, C. (s.str.) caecutiens ludens, D. umbrinus, P. aprica, T. exclusus, T. fraseri, T. glaucopis, T. indrae, T. lunatus, T. miki, T. shannonellus, T. spectabilis, T. spodopterus were reported for the first time in the Hatay province.
